Julio Pomar (1926-2018) – Original hand-signed lithograph. “Ulysses and the Two Sirens” – Extremely rare artist’s proof EA/30.
A major figure in 20th-century Portuguese art, Julio Pomar is considered one of the greatest masters of Portuguese Modernism and Surrealism, alongside Paula Rego and Vieira da Silva. This monumental lithograph, printed in an edition of only 175 plus a few artist’s proofs, represents one of his most powerful and sought-after compositions.
→ Signed in pencil by the artist
→ Artist’s proof numbered EA/30 (much rarer and more valuable than standard numbered copies)
→ Sheet size: 35.62×25.39 inches – a spectacular presence when framed.
→ Excellent condition: vibrant colors, paper without tears or creases, no foxing.
In this masterful work, Pomar reinterprets the myth of Ulysses with expressionist force and a unique surreal sensuality: the two sirens, with their hybrid bodies and hypnotic faces, seem almost alive, while Ulysses, tied to the mast, embodies the eternal struggle between desire and reason. The flat areas of blood red, the deep blacks, and the nervous lines are Pomar’s absolute signature from the 1970s and 80s, a period considered his graphic peak. A museum piece at a still accessible price!
Lithographs from this series, when they reappear (very rarely), generally fetch between €1,200 and €2,500 at auction for Artist’s Proofs (AP). We are offering this exceptional artist’s proof today for just €995 – likely one of the last opportunities to acquire a large mythological composition by Pomar at this price.
