Daido Moriyama is a Japanese photographer, born on October 10, 1938, in Ikeda, near Osaka. His photographs reflect the changing morals of Japan in the second half of the 20th century.
“Fundamentally, I’m passionate about black and white photography. If you’re wondering why, I’d say there’s something ‘dreamy’ about black and white, and I appreciate its ‘symbolically abstract’ side.
Ultimately, I think it all comes down to the fact that the elements depicted in a black and white photograph simply generate the image and impact of a kind of ‘extraordinary’ landscape.
In other worlds, I and others who view black and white photographs not only see the concrete events they depict, but, in my opinion, these images immediately strike us with their ‘extraordinaryness,’ instantly stimulating our imaginative understanding of the purified imagery in shades of black and white, and introducing us to a different reality through the encounter with this ‘foreign world.’ At least, that’s what attracts me so much to black and white photography.
On the other hand, if you ask me why I take color photographs, and More specifically, color Polaroids, I think it’s probably because they allow me to directly experience the essence of photography, which is to reproduce the real world. Paradoxically, this all-too-real world captured by color Polaroids takes me into a “foreign world.”
After all, I feel that when I walk down the street, I’m looking somewhere other than here; in other words, I probably only take the shot when I feel like I’ve found the entrance to this “foreign world.” – Daido Moriyama
