Restitution of Nazi-Looted Artworks: A Major Historical Investigation
Between 1994 and 2021, France returned 129 works of art held in public collections and marked MNR (Musées Nationaux Récupération – National Museums Recovery). Today, approximately 1,743 MNR works remain in the Louvre and other French museums.
The exhibition and its catalogue trace the history of Nazi looting in France and the efforts of the French government to return these works of art and objects looted during the Occupation to their rightful owners or heirs.
Aimed at the general public, and particularly younger generations, this book explains:
– The mechanisms of Nazi spoliation during the Second World War
– The restitution operations implemented immediately after the war
– The new proactive research and restitution measures undertaken in recent years
An essential reference work for understanding French policy on provenance research, safekeeping, and restitution of looted cultural property.
