Alex Katz’s clear planes of color and simplicity of line are said to be ideally suited to printmaking. For Katz himself, the medium also held the appeal of allowing his work to be distributed more widely. His embrace of printmaking was consolidated in the mid-1960s and led to a voracious exploration of printing technologies, including the latest cutting-edge reproduction processes. Each of these techniques brings out different qualities in Katz’s artistic vocabulary: woodcutting, for example, produces an emotional content not commonly found elsewhere in his work, because the traces left by the burin and the burn are legible and accepted by the artist. However, the main effect of Katz’s prints is to emphasize his art as a coldly Baudelairean “painting of modern life.” Although he frequently works with professional printers, Katz often does all the manual work himself. This volume assesses Katz’s history with printmaking and publishing, including collaborations with writers.
