Allen Jones, born in 1937, is a British pop art artist known for his paintings, sculptures and lithographs.

Jones’ first group of erotic fiberglass sculptures, consisting of a hat rack, a table and a chair, attracted international attention during its exhibition in 1970. The works encountered lively protests against perceived misogyny. More than three decades later, these works still carry a powerful emotional charge, entrenching the psychology and the sexual perspectives of each spectator, whatever their age, gender or experience.

The harsh reaction from the art world, feminists and the mainstream press after the sculptures began will limit Jones’ exhibition career in England for the next few decades.
