American Streamlined Design, The World Of Tomorrow (Book) by David Hanks, Anne Hoy, Samuel Gibson. New, In English, in Blister pack, 280 pages. 4.63 lbs.
The 20th century worshipped machines and the speed they enabled. Fast cars, trains, and airplanes promised to conquer space and time; their aerodynamic styling and metal bodies embodied a new, modern beauty, which particularly enchanted American designers from the late 1920s to the 1950s.
Streamlining became the popular American style for everything from toy scooters to typewriters, from power tools to kettles.
This book celebrates that beauty, embodied in the works of Raymond Loewy, Kem Weber, Henry Dreyfuss, and Norman Bel Geddes, as well as in those of many lesser-known industrial designers whose products are presented here for the first time. It also testifies to the renewed interest in streamlining among avant-garde international designers from the 1980s to the present day.
This volume is illustrated with patent drawings and period photographs showing how these dynamically styled objects were used. The 180 objects presented here, drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by pieces from the Stewart Collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, were photographed for this book. A comprehensive bibliography, biographies of the creators, and an index complete the study.
