Andre Masson (1896-1987) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and decorator of theater.

Andre Masson began his work with a traditional painting. He was influenced during his life by various pictorial movements such as Fauvism, symbolism, automatic drawings, surrealism and expressionism. Although Masson is most often associated with Surrealism, his work evades definition through any one twentieth-century movement. He has created an important production of works on paper, engravings, lithographs, drawings, and then tackled sculpture.

Masson had particularly close relationships throughout his life with poets and writers he illustrated because they had shared concerns.
