Anna Quinquaud, Explorer, Sculptor, Travels in the 1930s / Anna Quinquaud, exploratrice, sculptrice, voyage dans les années 30 (book) by Anne Doridou-Heim. Somogy art editions. 176-page hardcover book in very good condition. 2011. Evergreen. French text.

Anna Quinquaud (1890-1984) was the daughter of Thérèse Caillaux, a student of Rodin. Winner of the First and Second Grand Prix de Rome, the artist chose Africa over the Villa Medici. Accompanied by her porters for company, the artist immersed herself in the discovery of a continent that proved to be a powerful source of inspiration for her. It was against the grain of her time that she inscribed her relationship with the African continent, and the sculptor brought back respectful testimonies of her adopted homeland: busts and statuettes, tributes of extreme restraint, somewhere between serenity and melancholy. Success was forthcoming (major exhibitions in the 1930s, critical acclaim), and official commissions abounded: bas-reliefs of the wild animals in the Jardin des Plantes, the Palais de Chaillot, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, as well as monumental sculptures for the cathedrals of Dakar and Casablanca.

Anne Doridou-heim includes Bibliographic References (pp. [169]-172). One must imagine the extraordinary nature of a young woman alone on the trails of the African continent in 1925. This woman was Anna Quinquaud (1890-1984), a sculptor and winner of the Prix de Rome, who, to this prestigious award, preferred the uncertainty of distant adventure. Independent of spirit, refusing conventions, although Anna belonged to the official system that offered her travel grants, public commissions, and national recognition, she never displayed colonialism in Africa. Her work is a testimony and a tribute to the people she encountered. Until the Second World War, she enjoyed success: participation in major exhibitions, commissions for bas-reliefs, and collaborations with Sèvres and Quimper. This book brings her back into the spotlight and retraces her journey.
