Armand Fernandez known as Arman (1928-2005) was a Franco-American artist, painter, sculptor and emblematic visual artist of the 20th century, mainly recognized for his major contribution to the artistic movement of New Realism and, more particularly, for the art of accumulation. Throughout his life, Arman was a passionate collector of traditional African art of which he was a connoisseur, appreciated and recognized specialist.

Punu masks are indissolubly knowledge and power, they are surrounded by the secret that touches the sacred. African masks are used as religious objects to communicate with the spirits of ancestors, animals and the divine. Worn by dancers on stilts, these masks were used during a dance celebrating the ancestors of the clan.
