Arman, original signed lithograph, title: Ti-wara antelope crests, abstract art representing this mythical creature that is part of the legends of Mali. Dimensions: 29.92 x 21.65 inches. Very good condition. Sold unframed.
The Ti-wara, in African art, is said to be a fabulous animal that taught the Bambara, a local ethnic group in central Mali, to cultivate the land. This myth is brought to life by the stylized representation of an antelope with tapered horns with successive arcs representing the broad neck and mane.
The artist Arman (Armand Fernandez, 1928-2005) has been interested in so-called primitive arts since the 1950s. He had a collection of several hundred pieces. This African craft and its thousand-year-old history inspired him for this work.
