Crackle is a network of irregular meshes formed by the upper enamel of porcelain. Quickly, porcelain makers used it as a decoration technique for the type of porcelain known as “craquelé”. The cracks are not due to cooking defects but created deliberately as surface decoration. An aspect similar to the raku technique better known today. The first crackles are very old and date from the Song dynasty (960-1270), in China.
