Australian painting, 1788-1960 (book) by Bernard Smith. Oxford University Press. 1962. Very good condition considering its age (1962), bound, slight traces on the cover, label of a previous owner on 1st page, 358 pages, 266 illustrations in black and white and colors. In English.

This is a general introduction to Australian painting and a reference work of continuing value.

Europeans settled in Australia from the end of the 18th century, following the landing of the English explorer James Cook on the East Coast in 1770 (although some contacts had taken place before then, notably with Dutch sailors). The aboriginal people have lived on this country-continent for more than 50,000 years – it is one of the oldest cultures in the world!

Australian art has therefore taken two radically different forms. Firstly, art of European inspiration, called “colonial” in the 18th-19th century and which evolves towards a modern art inspired by impressionism, cubism or surrealism, up to a multiform contemporary art.
