To accompany the exhibition: Around Symbolism, Photography and Painting of the 19th Century held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Bozar Editions are publishing this book illustrated on the one hand with the works from the exhibition and on the other hand supported by the reflections of Christine De Naeyer, Alain D’Hooghe, Luce Lebart, Dominique Planchon-de Font-Réaulx and Michel Poivert.
It highlights how, indeed, in photography, mention was made very early on of imitations of painting. How, with pictorialism, was added the experimentation of textures and pictorial effects, in addition to staging. Then in parallel, how painting, thus freed from its representative function, was able to emancipate itself, leave behind figuration and approach new themes. This is how Degas, Knopf, von Stuck worked on the basis of personal photos but also Delacroix who was inspired by photos of Durieu or Vallou de Villeneuve.
