In the 19th century, the imagination of Bacchus, wine, ecstasy and exalted dance provided art with a rich source of inspiration. In France, the surprising resurgence of the theme of the bacchanal reveals in particular the ambitions of a society in rapid metamorphosis, of a world turned towards the celebration of earthly pleasures and material joys. Invested by this wave of creative intoxication, the artists let themselves be fully carried away by the fascinating imagination of the ancient god and his followers, fauns, nymphs, satyrs or bacchantes.
It is then the numerous resurgences of the bacchanal in painting, sculpture, but also literature, music, dance and cinema, from the romantic era to the beginning of the 20th century, that this book wishes to explore, in order to reveal the multiple stakes of this brilliant return to the universe of Bacchus. Antiquity, the study and memory of which nourish the imagination of poets and artists, from Leconte de Lisle to Gustave Moreau, is the starting point, the reference always evoked, but, in the 19th century, the bacchanalian subjects quickly free themselves from the heritage of the past to authorize the expression of forms and subjects more and more audacious and disturbing.
The bacchanal, a true avatar of contemporary morals, thus reveals the hidden facets of an era torn between norm and transgression, between reason and imagination, where myth is transformed into modern fantasy.
The Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts explores the polymorphic and sensual figure of the bacchante in the different artistic disciplines of the 19th century. In partnership with the Palais Fesch in Ajaccio, the Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts is offering an original exhibition. This event with its original purpose explores the representation of the bacchante in all artistic fields in the 19th century. A polymorphic, sensual and transgressive figure, the bacchante is indeed omnipresent in 19th century creation. In order to highlight the recurrence of this subject and its countless variations, the event approaches this theme in a multidisciplinary manner by mixing paintings, sculptures, photographs, dance, music and decorative arts. The route brings together creators as diverse as Pradier, Rodin and Berlioz. It brings together around a hundred works from the finest French public collections: the Louvre, the Rodin Museum, the Petit Palais, the National Library of France, and the museums of Lille, Rouen and Nantes.
