Catalogue of the exhibition “Brassaï, la maison que j’habite” presented at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (12 Feb. – 17 May 2010) and previously at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes (2009).

Of Hungarian origin, Brassaï became known for his famous collection “Paris la nuit” published in 1932, then by photographing many of his contemporaries: Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti, Dali…

Comprising nearly 150 photographs, some of which have never been published before, the exhibition focuses on a “surrealist Brassaï” and undoubtedly bears witness to one of the most creative aspects of his art.

The title of this anthology in black and white: The house I live in borrowed from that of a photograph published in 1934 in the magazine Minotaure to introduce André Breton’s famous statement on “convulsive beauty”, invites us to share the intimacy of a very great artist of the 20th century.

Dali Gyula Halàsz, known as Brassaï, 1899-1984. He settled in Paris in 1924. A draftsman, painter, sculptor, writer, he quickly felt in harmony with the city and his long nocturnal wanderings would lead to his famous collection of photographs Paris at night published in 1932 which made him famous throughout the world.
