The 2CV has punctuated my life as a photographer for over 22 years, because every year in my images, there were one or two photos of Provençal scenes with, in a corner, a 2CV. Then one day, while walking through the lavender fields, in Montsalier to be precise, I discovered, near a small farm, a red 2CV. It was almost no longer running, without a back seat, but was in the middle of flowering lavender. It was used as a cart once a year to bring wood back to the farm. This image has become, through its success as a postcard, the symbol of my publishing house La Lézarde: languid in the sun, it kept as its signature only a lizard on its wing. As my research progressed, the 2CVs came to me until I saw only them, in the streets from the South to Provence, via the Côte d’Azur to Corsica.
This book shows that they are all very much alive: whether they are still rolling or whether they end up as a metal sculpture at the end of a meadow… Julien Lautier.
