Fastes d’intérieurs, tapisseries, étoffes et broderies du château de Grignan / Interior splendor, tapestries, fabrics and embroidery of the castle of Grignan (Book) by Chrystèle Burgard and Laurence Lavergne. 2008. Like new, paperback. 96 pages. Somogy Editions. Book in French.
This book, a panorama of the decorative art of French textiles from the 16th to the 18th century, presents the textile collections of the castle of Grignan, the historic home of the Adhémar de Monteil family. Among its treasures stands out a series of seven tapestries called the History of Ariane, belonging to the original furniture of the castle.
In the heart of the Drôme Provençale, overlooking plains and mountains, the castle of Grignan is built on a rocky promontory overlooking the village. Witness to Renaissance architecture and French classicism, the building has had a turbulent history. A fortified castle mentioned as early as the 11th century, it was transformed during the Renaissance into a prestigious pleasure residence by the Adhémar family. In the 17th century, the Marquise de Sévigné stayed there several times with her daughter Françoise-Marguerite.
