Exiled in the United States during the Second World War, Fernand Léger taught at Yale University. There he met young students dressed in bright and non-conformist colors who inspired him for a series of drawings and paintings entitled “The Cyclists”. Strong color can here give full use of its power… This American period is particularly creative with the series of Divers and Cyclists, Léger invents the principle of color outside the subject, in which he dissociates colors and shapes.

The painter freezes the cyclists with their racing bikes in a pose. The colors freely distributed on the canvas animate the space. Léger used this uneven coloring effect on many occasions. The color outside the line, freely distributed, is experimented for the first time in this work begun in 1943 in the United States and completed in 1948 on his return to France.
