Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was an Irish-British painter renowned for his triptychs. A painter of violence, cruelty, and tragedy, his mind was haunted, according to his own words, by Aeschylus’s verse, “The smell of human blood never leaves my eyes.” Bacon’s work unfolds in large triptychs depicting his life, his friends, his admiration for Diego Velázquez, Vincent van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso, or in tortured portraits, as if folded into the texture of the canvas, of his friends Michel Leiris, Mick Jagger, and others.

From late 1991 to early 1992, shortly before his death, painter Francis Bacon participated in rare interviews and sittings with French photographer : Francis Giacobetti. Giacobetti captured strange images inspired by Bacon’s disturbing works.

These photographs, along with previously unseen paintings by Bacon, were exhibited in June 2003 at the Marlborough Gallery in London. This volume presents these photographs and excerpts from their conversations, offering an intimate portrait of this disconcerting artist.
