François Raty is a French ceramist born in 1928, little known to connoisseurs but considered a major figure in the art of fire in the 20th century. Before his sad passing in 1982, François Raty left us a rich legacy.

French ceramist, painter, sculptor, and goldsmith.

He was born in Paris during the interwar period into a family of prominent industrialists. In 1946, François Raty studied drawing and painting for two years at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

His first exhibition took place in 1946. In 1951, he moved to the famous pottery town of Vallauris, where he met numerous artists, including René Maurel (1910-1986), who taught him ceramics.

François Raty quickly created unique pieces, distinguished by their carefully engraved motifs enhanced with brown enamels. Like Picasso and the Surrealists with whom he often associated, the artist drew inspiration from the animal world: birds, monkeys, fennec foxes, bulls, horses, gorillas, and even insects. His bestiary, imbued with sarcastic humor and hieratic figures, is made in both ceramic and bronze.
