Gérard Laplau (1938-2009) naive painter. What first catches the eye in Laplau’s painting are the bright and joyful colors: his meadows are strewn with multi-colored flowers and his cities are totally transfigured by the magic of his colors.

It is a lesson in happiness and a breath of fresh air that jumps out at you. Laplau transforms the hectic life around him into a restful calm. And hectic, it is, seeing the festive and popular scenes that he paints and which are so many slices of life and anecdotes. We witness a swarm of characters, surrounded by familiar animals, indispensable and complementary companions of man. His gift for observing life in both the city and the countryside, makes him paint daily occupations. He traces the peaceful and charming atmosphere of a street corner, a market, or any particular moment. The description is kind, but irony sometimes appears under the line.

Gérard Laplau is a wonderful popular storyteller, with a prodigious imagination, and a gaze similar to that of the photographer who knows how to capture the moment and reproduce it as he wishes.
