Graphismes de Manet, essai sur un catalogue raisonné de dessins / Graphics by Manet, essay on a catalog raisonné of drawings (book) by Jacques Mathey. Editor F. de Nobele. 1961. Semi-rigid cover, approximately 70 pages (the pages are not numbered). Very good interior condition but cover with slight traces, staple perforations and a trace of a paperclip. French version.
The text and illustrations in halftone engraving were printed on the presses of the Priester printing company; the off-texts were made in collotype by Ateliers Duval.
Edouard Manet’s first nude drawings are not linked to any canvas although they were created after “The Surprised Nymph”, therefore logically in the wake of the nude, but which will stop the following year with the series of costumed women. Only the last etching in the series is freely inspired by it.
Édouard Manet produced a very large number of prints and drawings, sometimes after having painted the canvas of the same subject, sometimes on commission from Alfred Cadart, sometimes to illustrate a text, such as Edgar Allan Poe’s poem The Raven ( poem).
