James Pichette, (1920-1996) brother of the poet and playwright Henri Pichette, is a French painter associated with the current of the informal art.

After settling in Paris immediately after the World War II, he hesitated between acting and painting. His choice will eventually be to be a painter.

James Pichette begins his work as a painter figuratively, then goes through a cubist period. Around 1947, he made his first abstract works, tinged with surrealism. In 1960, he met Sam Francis and Calder in New York who influenced his style. His painting then leaves a large place for gestuality, now lying between lyrical abstraction and more structured composition.

James Pichette died in Paris in 1996.
