José de Guimarães (book) by Gillo Dorfles, Bernardo Pinto de Almeida and Marc le Bot. Very good condition. Hardcover with protective case. 1991. Bilingual: Portuguese and English. Book dedicated and signed by José de Guimarães with the mention “For Daniel”. Editions Afrontamento. 249 pages.
José de Guimarães is one of the most unique figures in contemporary art, whose training as an engineer, his artist’s eye, his anthropologist’s approach and his passion as a collector have been combined for sixty years in a graphic language with a colorful chromatic palette.
What is art if it does not make us feel more alive? What is the artist if he does not go where no one else goes? An eternal traveler, José de Guimarães went to the farthest corner of the world to nourish the roots of his being and his art. He was born in the North of Portugal, in the small medieval town of Guimarães, whose name he adopted to sign his works. It is as if this “transcultural nomad”, according to the words of the art critic Pierre Restany, had never wanted to lose sight of his belonging to a first land. Passionate about engraving since his engineering studies in Lisbon, he very quickly turned to art and touched on Pop Art, as the first works exhibited recall.
