Kim en-Joong was born in South Korea in 1940 during the Japanese occupation. He converted to Catholicism in 1963. Initially a “painter of white”, Father Kim rediscovered light and reinvested the color palette. He deepened his knowledge of the impressionist universe and encountered American art. From watercolor to acrylic and then to oil, his technique evolved towards ever greater transparency. He moved on to large formats. Father Kim is part of the tradition of lyrical abstraction. He favors many media: acrylic, oil painting, porcelain, and especially stained glass. Julien Green, whom he met in 1980, wrote a passionate eulogy on the artist’s work.
