Kyogen Costumes, Kyoto Shoin’s Art Library of Japanese Textiles (Book) by Ken Kirihata. Hardcover, Like New, bilingual English/Japanese, 1993. 96 pages.
Kyogen is a classic genre of comic drama about everyday life in the Muromachi period. In Kyogen plays, personal relationships, communication within families, and the connections between people and deities, Buddhist beliefs, and nature are depicted in a comic and sometimes sarcastic manner.
Kyogen costumes follow the style of clothing worn by common people in the Muromachi period. Unlike the extravagant Noh costumes decorated with profuse embroidery with gold and silver leaf, Kyogen costumes are understated, apparently because they were worn by more familiar characters such as the casual daimyo warriors and their retainers.
