Specialist in the early Middle Ages and Baroque in Switzerland. Linus Birchler wrote several literary works (poems, short stories, novels) and he relaunched the representation of religious plays in Einsiedeln (Welttheater from 1924). From 1927 to 1935, he wrote the volumes of Monuments of Art and History of Switzerland relating to the cantons of Schwyz (the first in the series) and Zug and was a pioneer in the inventory of cultural property. Professor of architectural history and general art history at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1934-1961) and director of the Federal Commission for Historical Monuments (1942 to 1963). Co-founder and first president of the Swiss Institute for Art Studies (1951). Birchler received the Central Switzerland Cultural Prize in 1962. Scientific director and advisor during the restoration of numerous monuments (including Müstair Abbey, the St. Justus Church in Flums, the St. John the Baptist parish church in Bernhardzell).
