The Art of portraying, Dutch Painting in the 17th Century. Svetlana Alpers endeavors to renew the approach to Dutch painting by highlighting a striking and fruitful explanatory contrast: Italian art is the expression of a textual culture where multiple meanings, symbolic in nature, mix allegorical and philosophical.
The world of 17th century Dutch masters, a complete figure of the Nordic model, is, on the contrary, a visual culture. A descriptive art, as opposed to a narrative art. This art of depicting, however, goes far beyond what the 19th century accustomed us to consider as realism. It appears at first glance, in these countryside landscapes, in these genre scenes and these still lifes, by surprising optical biases and refers, in fact, to the scientific revolutions of the telescope and the microscope, to the omnipresence of the image at the center of social life, as of the representation of oneself and the world.
