Le grand livre des oiseaux par J.J. Audubon (Book) Preface Jean Dorst, Citadelles et Mazenod publisher. 1989. Hardcover,  like new, some foxing on edge, in a slightly used slipcase with some light stains on upper and lower edges. French texts. Size: 15.35 x 12.60 inches. Weight 18 lbs.

The great book of birds by Jean-Jacques Audubon. Who knows Jean-Jacques Audubon, 1785-1850? This painter born in France, pupil of David, nevertheless enjoys a great reputation across the Atlantic. For almost fifty years, he painstakingly sketched the New World birds on his notebooks. Not content with rendering the shade of a branch, he set out to replace each species in its natural setting, painting its subjects at their real size.

This book resumes its masterful work with an incomparable print quality and fidelity to the original. The artist’s extraordinary talent (composition, harmony of colors and volumes, precision of the line …) is fully restored. Scientific rigor accompanies it: the names (order, species, family) and common names have been updated while leaving those, sometimes approximate, of the original edition. This new classification is due to two world-renowned ornithologists: Roger-Tory Peterson and his wife Virginia-Marie Peterson, scientists and artists as competent and passionate as Audubon was in his time.
