The Mougin Brothers, Wizards of the High Fire, Stoneware and Porcelain, 1898-1950 (book) by Jacques G. Peiffer. Editions Faton. Hardcover book in French, 240 pages. 2001. Very good condition.
Originally from Nancy, Joseph and Pierre Mougin experimented with all the possibilities of high-fire firing during the first half of the 20th century. From Symbolism to Art Nouveau, from Art Deco to abstraction, their stoneware statuettes, vases and pots combine innovative forms and sumptuous enamels.
The early works of the Mougin brothers combine crystallizations with glazes, demonstrating a keen sense of detail while preferring lyricism to realism. For the first part of their works inscribed in Art Nouveau, it is between plant naturalism translated by stoneware and feminine symbolism in the form of porcelain statuettes that the two brothers express their art. This dichotomy is often found together in the same work, particularly through Joseph’s influences such as Injalbert, Max Blondat, Rops and his great friend Victor Prouvé, for whom the artist has great admiration.
