M2, Repetitions, Photographies de L’Agence Magnum (Book) Like New, Bilingual French / English. Introduction by Diane Dufor and Nicolas Guirand. Paperback, 144 pages.

M is a biannual magazine which explores the role of photography beyond its usual illustration and marketing objectives by tackling the question of its documentary value. Juxtaposing emblematic images of the past with the recent work of Magnum photographers, its objective is to question the status of the photographic document and to reveal the scope and diversity of approaches to reality within Magnum Photos. This issue is devoted to the theme of rehearsals. The notion of repetition is opposed to that of “decisive moment” and undermines the singularity of each image. The repetition process emphasizes the position of the author and involves a construction, an obsession, a demonstration, sometimes a story: the fixed but constantly moving point of view of Paul Fusco, the obstinate quest of Raymond Depardon and the theatrical form of Alex Majoli. From one series to another, repetition finds its origin in doubt or affirmation, concept or intuition, conscious choices or circumvented constraints. M2 offers: Antoine d’Agata, Thomas Dworzak, Harry Gruyaert, Jim Goldberg, Philippe Halsman, Lise Sarfati, Larry Towell, among others.
