Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is a painter, but also a sculptor and a poet.

Marc Chagall comes from a modest family of Jewish origin. It is in his hometown that he discovers painting, before leaving in 1907 to study at the Beaux-Arts in Saint-Petersburg and begin to work. Dreaming of discovering Paris, he moved there in 1911. There he meets many artists such as Fernand Leger and Apollinaire.

In 1922, Marc Chagall moved to Berlin where he made his first engravings and autobiography “My life”, before returning to France in 1923 and produce, among others, drawings and gouaches. He traveled extensively in Europe and to Palestine in 1931 to take part in the creation of a Jewish art museum.

While he obtained the French nationality in 1937, World War II forced Marc Chagall to leave in free zone to finally join the United States in 1941, like many other artists.

In 1948, the end of the war marked the return to France of Marc Chagall, but also its recognition at the international level with several retrospectives organized around the world.

Marc Chagall will work on his art until his last days.
