Marco Del Re, Invitation to the Journey (book) Texts by Vénus Khoury-Ghata and Yasmine Ghata. New paperback in French. 2017. Maeght Publisher. Unsigned and unnumbered lithographic print. Dimensions: 7.48 x 4.33 inches. 32 pages.
This book is dedicated to Marco Del Re and his 2017 exhibition. An ode to beauty described by Vénus Khoury-Ghata, winner of the Prix Goncourt for poetry, and her daughter, Yasmine, a successful novelist. For them, Marco Del Re is a link in a chain that goes back to the great masters of the last two centuries, those who loved the hinterland of Nice. “A lineage that he stages in his paintings,” the authors remind us. In the summer, Marco Del Re hardly basks in the sun. He nourishes himself with the light of the Mediterranean Sea that shines behind the umbrella pines. Like the great masters who preceded him in this world, he too works in a studio overlooking the grounds of the Maeght Foundation, which, in Saint-Paul de Vence, houses Europe’s finest collection of contemporary art, presided over by Adrien, the patriarch, and his daughter Isabelle. It is there that he finds his inspiration, as Braque and Matisse did before him. In his canvases, the Eternal City where he was born is never far away. He titles his works Roma orbis urbs, or Roman Elegies, inspired by Goethe’s journey to Italy. His message: “building on ruins,” write the authors, who add: “A painting by Del Ré is like an epic, a monument.” His work is a journey through different eras where classical tradition and modern painting coexist.
