Niki de Saint Phalle, 1930-2002, is a French-American plastic artist, painter, sculptor.

She did not follow any academic artistic education, but fed on abundant artistic exchanges with her elders and contemporaries. Inspired by several trends, art brut, art outsider, she started painting in 1952. In 1961, she was a member of the group of New Realists, like Gérard Deschamps, César, Mimmo Rotella, Christo and Yves Klein. She married in second marriage to the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely in 1971. With him, she will create a large number of sculpture-architectures.

But if the media let themselves be taken by her apparent casualness, art historians, like Camille Morineau, Pontus Hultén or Amelia Jones, have retained from her her strong, excessive works, and her risk-taking. Niki de Saint Phalle leaves behind an immense work of which she has made generous donations, in particular to the Sprengel Museum Hannover and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice.
