Ode au grand art Africain, les statues meurent aussi / Ode to great African art, statues also die (book) by Alain Resnais, Chris Marker. VisionsPublishers. 2010, Softcover. 176 pages. Like new. In French.

Articulated around the eponymous short film directed by Alain Resnais and Chris Marker in 1953, this ambitious event made it possible to rediscover icons of African art and the view of two great authors on a resolutely other art, where “man is not never separated from the world” (Marker). She highlighted the avant-garde accents of this film and retraced the unique story which saw the talent of two great directors united in a passionate adventure and the view of the most important collectors of the time such as Tristan Tzara or René Rasmussen.

For the first time, some of the works presented in this film and preserved today in the largest museums (Barbier-Mueller, Dapper, etc.) and private collections have been brought together in an exhibition and exhibited alongside the broadcast of the film in loop in the “salles de la Monnaie de Paris”. They were accompanied by large format prints of numerous photograms from the film, to highlight the work of composition and interpretation of Ghislain Cloquet, director of photography who received, in 1981, the Oscar for best photography for his work on Tess .
