Ogura Yuki, A Century of Inspiration (Book) A woman’s passion for painting. Paperback, like new, bilingual French/Japanese. 1999. This exhibition is dedicated to her work, of major importance in the history of NIHONGA. Insho-sha edition, Asahi Shimbun, 115 pages. Exhibition catalog from 09/02 to 24/04/1999, Paris. This was her first exhibition abroad.

Yuki Ogura died at an advanced age of 105. At first, her calm and flat photos of women in kimono, and her delicate studies of flowers dating back to the Edo period.

The Nihon Bijutsu-in Foundation (Japan Art Institute), which deliberately rejected Western artistic trends and tried to promote a purely Japanese aesthetic.

To distinguish themselves from Western style painters, nihonga artists have limited themselves to traditional materials such as Indian ink and powdered mineral pigments applied to hanging rollers, screens or paper and silk on canvas..

The emphasis on form rather than movement, so typical of nihonga, creates a feeling of stillness in this work, as if its subject held its breath.

Despite the isolationism of Japan, Yuki Ogura was ready to experiment, introducing new daily themes and surprising compositions into her works.
