Pan Yu Lin – Catalogue Raisonné of Prints by Rita Wong (2017)
Pan Yuliang Catalogue Raisonné: Prints is the definitive reference work on the prints of Pan Yuliang (also spelled Pan Yu Lin).
Edited by Rita Wong and published in 2017 by The Li Ching Cultural and Educational Foundation, this bilingual catalogue (Traditional Chinese/English) comprises 168 pages.
A comprehensive and invaluable catalogue
This book exhaustively lists the drypoint prints of Pan Yuliang, including many previously unpublished works. It combines the original plates held at the Anhui Museum with the prints in the Musée Cernuschi in Paris.
Who was Pan Yuliang?
Pan Yuliang (1895–1977) was among the first women to graduate from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. A pioneer, she was one of the very first Chinese artists to adopt Western painting techniques.
Born in 1895 in Jiangsu Province, she profoundly influenced 20th-century Chinese modern art. Trained at the Shanghai School, renowned for its openness to Western techniques, particularly life drawing, she developed a bold style early on.
An artist between two worlds
In 1921, Pan Yuliang settled in France. She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and then in Paris. Her works, especially her depictions of nudes, provoked a heated controversy in China in the 1930s, as the female nude remained a taboo subject at the time.
Faced with criticism, she chose to settle permanently in Paris, from where she became a prominent figure on the international art scene. Her exhibitions around the world attest to her success.
A complete artist, Pan Yuliang spent his life fusing Chinese traditions with Western influences. His engravings reflect this ongoing dialogue between East and West, tradition and modernity.
