About the Artist
Paul Ambille (1930–2010), born in Béziers, France, was a renowned French painter and official Peintre de la Marine (Painter of the Navy). After training at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (workshops of Dupas, Legueult, and Goerg), he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for Painting in 1955 – one of France’s highest artistic honors – allowing him to study at the Villa Medici in Rome.

Ambille became celebrated for his luminous, impressionistic style, mastering dynamic seascapes, marine subjects, regattas, and equestrian scenes. He received over 40 gold medals and grand prizes, including awards from the Salon de la Marine. His works evoke movement and light with classical virtuosity, generously capturing the wind-filled sails and exhilarating spirit of yacht racing.

This lithograph showcases his signature talent: the mastery of spinnakers riding crests of bleached waves, seeking the perfect wind, or riders fused with their mounts in the final sprint – all rendered with fluid, vibrant energy.
