Paul Ranson, fantasmes et sortilèges, Musée Maurice Denis / Paul Ranson, fantasies and spells, Maurice Denis Museum (book) Somogy editions d’art. Factory sealed. 2009. Paperback. Authors: Gilles Genty, Françoise Bessis, Marie El Caïdi, Granjabiel. in French.
Paul-Élie Ranson (1861-1909), complex artist and founding member of the Nabis group, nicknamed the “Japanese Nabis more Japanese than Bonnard” because of his passion for Japonism, was at the same time painter, engraver and writer. His love for the decorative arts and his desire to remove the boundary between major arts and applied arts led him to try multiple media (decorative panels, wallpaper, tapestries and stained glass windows) in a purely Nabis ideology according to which “He there are no paintings, only decorations.” Paul-Élie Ranson also developed a fascination for esoteric subjects, magic and the occult.
This work seeks to explore this facet of his work through seven major themes (Decorative symbolism, Satanic esotericism, Christianity, From sensual women to intimacy, Symbolic nature, Ranson: His family and friends, Tales, fables and legends, illustrated by around a hundred creations. The centenary of Ranson’s death is indeed an opportunity to explore a more intimate aspect of the work of this great artist.
