Haitian Painters (Book) by Gérald Alexis. In Very Good Condition, Light Traces on Cover, Hardcover, 2001. 303 pages. Publisher Cercle d’Art. French language.
Haitian painting, revealed in the late 1940s, has never ceased to arouse the interest of an increasingly large audience. If it has been the subject of dozens of publications, very few of them are due to Haitian authors. In this sense, Haitian painters offers a new approach since the author, Gérald Alexis, university graduate in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin and specializing in art in the Caribbean and Latin America is Haitian by birth. For more than twenty years, he has continued to perfect his knowledge of Haitian art, of which he is today a recognized authority.
It offers an original approach, structured around four major themes which reflect the diversity of expressions: Portrait and history painting; Nature and everyday life; Voodoo, rhythm and structure; Figuration-Abstraction. Biographical notes, enriched with photographic portraits of the artists, and a rich critical apparatus complete this reference work which offers more than 300 color reproductions. Without opposing the notion of miracle, Gérald Alexis took care to highlight the close links that unite painting with the history and artistic and cultural traditions of Haiti, to explain this spectacular development since the creation of the Art Center in 1944.
