Landscape may appear to be a subject rarely treated by Picasso if we compare it to others, such as portraits or still lifes. Nevertheless, from Málaga to Vauvenargues, his work is punctuated by landscapes which bear witness to his numerous stays on the Côte d’Azur as well as the vacation spots that he occupied successively from 1948 to 1973: La Galloise in Vallauris, the villa La Californie in Cannes, the Château de Vauvenargues and the Mas de Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougins. More than thirty Mediterranean landscapes by Picasso are reproduced here, compared with landscapes of the South executed by his contemporaries, friends or acquaintances: Georges Braque, André Derain, Moïse Kisling, Juan Gris, Auguste Herbin, Othon Friesz, Raoul Duli’ or André Lhote. A selection of photographs by Robert Capa, André Villers, David Douglas Duncan, Robert Picault and Lucien Clergue illustrate the familiar places, the workshops and the amounts of relaxation spent with the family of the Catalan Master on the shores of the Mediterranean.

This exhibition is organized as part of “Picasso-Mediterranean”, an international cultural event which takes place from 2017 to 2019. More than seventy institutions have together imagined a program around the “obstinately Mediterranean” work of Pablo Picasso. On the initiative of the Picasso-Paris National Museum, this journey through the artist’s creation and the places that inspired him offers a unique cultural experience, seeking to strengthen the links between all shores.
