Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes was a major artist of the Neoclassical movement. Trained at the Royal Academy of Toulouse, he lived in Paris and Italy. Close to David, he developed a theory of historical landscape painting in which the study from nature played a crucial role. A meticulous and sensitive draftsman, he was able to translate the rugged density of tree stumps as well as the carefree nobility of Roman palaces. His concern for rendering light and atmospheric effects is particularly evident in his oil sketches on paper, unknown to his contemporaries. These sketches, rediscovered in 1930, confirmed the essential role played by Valenciennes—through his pupil Michallon—among the forerunners of Corot.
His graceful work perfectly illustrates the artistic transformation of the late 18th century, which gradually gave way to the painters of the Romantic movement.
