Pierre Soulages, (1919- Rodez in Aveyron, is a French painter and engraver associated since the end of the 1940s with abstract art.
Soulages is particularly known for his use of reflections of the color black, which he calls “black-light” or “outrenoir”. Having produced some 1,550 paintings whose titles are all composed of the word “painting” followed by the mention of the format, he is one of the main representatives of informal painting.
In more than sixty years of activity, Pierre Soulages established himself as one of the great innovators of modern painting and one of the most prolific, producing more than 1,700 paintings on canvas, 600 paintings on paper, 120 prints (engravings, lithographs, serigraphs) as well as the 104 stained glass windows of the abbey church Saint Foy of Conques.
