Raphael, French name of Raffaello Sanzio, (also named Raffaello Santi, Raffaello da Urbino, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), is an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, here is a superb XXL edition which constitutes the most complete study ever published on Raphael.

Raphael (1483–1520) is considered one of the most important artists of the Italian High Renaissance along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. During his short life, he painted around a hundred works and numerous frescoes, including nine cycles, on an exceptional variety of themes, ranging from sensual feminine beauty to ancient myths, including portraits, to historical events and biblical scenes. He produced altarpieces, designed tapestries for the Sistine Chapel and directed the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica. His Sistine Madonna is one of the most reproduced religious paintings of all time.

Raphaël was endowed with an inexhaustible thirst for learning, there was no question of stopping, nor of repeating solutions already proven, but only of continuing a tireless quest for a boundless imagination. He transformed his favorite theme, the visionary experience of divine grace, into a visible pictorial reality. It is his mature works, in Rome, and above all his frescoes in the Vatican, which have assured him a place in the history of art. Admired during his lifetime as the most modern artist of his time, Raphael’s work opened the way to Mannerism and the Baroque era.

This volume includes 112 paintings and all frescoes, architectural projects and tapestries in new reproductions and many details, as well as the catalog raisonné of the artist’s work. A team of experts in Raphael’s work also introduces the fascinating interaction of art and power in the High Renaissance.
