Step into Robert Combas’ ‘Le Mariage,’ a captivating 1998 artist proof lithograph where Free Figuration dances with French ritual. Born in Lyon in 1957, Combas, trained at the Montpellier School of Fine Arts, developed an artistic style inspired by punk, fusing comic book aesthetics and African influences, and a bold critique that has, at times, sparked controversy. This 22.24 x 29.52 inch-work, printed on paper, features three vibrant scenes: a married couple in a suit and dress, the moving moment of the exchange of rings, and a revisited French notary’s logo, evoking notarized marriage contracts. “Framed” by starry borders, it is an unnumbered artist’s proof (EA), exhibiting slight foxing in the left margin. A masterpiece from 1998, it combines rebellion and traditions!
