Roger Vieillard, catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre gravé / catalog raisonné of the engraved work, volume I and II,  1934-1989 (Book)  By Anne Guerin, Virginie Rault.  Like New, in French. No slipcase.

An exceptional engraver, Roger Vieillard (1907-1989) was a passionate and discreet artist whose whole work is an exemplary plea in favor of the chisel and the honesty of the engraving. Initiated by the painter-engraver Stanley William Hayter and Joseph Hecht, he frequented in 1934 the famous Atelier 17, which was the decisive center for the renewal of the art of original engraving. He was the friend of many artists such as Villon, Chagall, Fernandez, Bazaine, Courtin, and his culture as well as his literary gifts linked him to several writers such as André Frénaud, Jean Paulhan, Jean Tardieu or Jacqueline de Romilly.

Recognized by critics, honored worldwide by his peers and the curators of print firms, however little known to the general public as any engraver who is only an engraver, Roger Vieillard has composed for half a century a singular work whose elegance, inventiveness and thoroughness made him the most gifted of the burinists of the 20th century. You could say that he was one of the major representatives, in a little publicized discipline, of the Paris school from 1936-1970. This catalog is both a scientific work for professionals and collectors and a magnificent art book. The genetic analysis of the engraved work, including the reproduction and meticulous description of the tests of intermediate states, in addition to the identification of each of the tests, makes it possible to follow the great burinist in the intimate movement of his creation. The quality, the format of the reproductions, the writings and words of the artist, who becomes the own commentator of his work, make it an attractive work, accessible to all.
