Rufino Tamayo, Catalog Raisonné, Gráfica, Prints, 1925-1991 (book) by Juan-Carlos Pereda, Raquel Tibor. 2005. Publisher Turner Publications. Bilingual English/Spanish. 368 pages. Hardcover book in very good condition.
First catalog raisonné of the important graphic production produced between 1925 and 1991 by the Mexican Rufino Tamayo (Oaxaca, 1899 – Mexico, 1991).
This bilingual (English-Spanish) catalogue raisonné of Rufino Tamayo’s prints reproduces in color all the prints – including woodcuts, lithographs, serigraphs, artist’s books and late mixographs – ever made by the great Mexican artist. Tamayo made approximately 320 prints between 1925 and 1991. Many of them were made with different inks, and these ink colors are respected in the printing of the catalogue; in several cases, the printing processes themselves will also be reproduced. His work as a muralist in the purest “Mexicanism” culminates in the mural painting El Día y la Noche. Made in 1964 for the National Museum of Anthropology and History of Mexico, it symbolizes the struggle between day (feathered serpent) and night (tiger). That same year, he received the National Arts Prize. Full and expert commentary is given on each print regarding the edition, workshop and publisher. This project has required nearly ten years of research at the Museum and the Tamayo Foundation in Mexico City.
