Samuel Lewis Francis (1923-1994) was an American painter and printmaker. Originally, Sam Francis is not intended for an artistic career, but begins his studies in medicine and psychology.

It is during a long hospitalization that the click for painting occurs: first to pass the time, he ends up practicing it for pleasure. He will remain convinced of the therapeutic virtues of art throughout his life.

Like most painters of the years 1950-60, Sam Francis can be “cataloged” in various movements: lyrical abstraction, abstract expressionism, tachism, action painting, colorfield painting, as many influences that one finds in Sam Francis but none cannot be applied alone, for him.

He developed in his paintings a new aesthetic of color, a new conception of the canvas, of the gesture of the artist, thus inscribing in the different movements of his time initiated and developed by American artists such as Rothko, Jackson Pollock, de Kooning or Kline.
