This large-format catalogue raisonné, which includes over 270 colour illustrations and accompanies a major international travelling exhibition, will be the most comprehensive printed publication on Lucas. Reproducing all of Lucas’s extant works to date, it will examine the themes that have dominated the sculptures, photographs and installations she has produced over the last fifteen years. Lucas transforms ordinary materials in ways that challenge our perceptions of the world around us. Her own self-image recurs often, often in forms that challenge traditional representations of the feminine.

Sarah Lucas is one of Britain’s most prominent contemporary artists. Born in London in 1962, she rose to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the Frieze generation. She has established an international reputation for her provocative and often darkly humorous works, which often repurpose found objects in striking ways. These typically abject works of art fit perfectly into the body of work that Sarah Lucas has been building since the early 1990s from seemingly banal and everyday materials. Through the slyly anthropomorphic nature of her sculptures, Sarah Lucas constantly references the human body, questioning definitions of gender and challenging male-dominated culture, particularly that advocated by the British sensationalist press. She subverts gender stereotypes in her appropriations of tabloid jargon and unexpected juxtapositions of objects, often employing visual wit and provocative, sardonic humor.
