James Pichette (1920–1996), brother of the poet Henri Pichette, was a French painter linked to lyrical abstraction and Art Informel. After World War II (during which he served in the Resistance and earned the Croix de Guerre), he settled in Paris and chose painting over acting. He began with figurative and cubist works, turned to abstraction around 1947 (with surrealist influences), and later developed a dynamic, gestural style. His 1960 meeting with Sam Francis and Alexander Calder in New York reinforced his expressive use of color, movement, and rhythm—often inspired by jazz.
This 1987 signed lithograph exemplifies his mature, energetic abstract style with bold forms and vivid colors.
